The Bog Turtle
Their Habitat
These special little turtles prefer to live in moist, soft marshes and shallow flooded wetlands. They lay their eggs in either wet or dry places, however, they prefer wetlands as they help protect the eggs from predators, such as raccoons and skunks, that want to eat them.
Their Diet
Bog turtles typically eat insects, seeds, berries, worms, small snakes, and snails, they typically eat these things when they live in dryer habitats. When they live in wetter habitats they also eat crayfish, frogs and slugs.
Interesting Fact!
The bog turtles in Pennsylvania hibernate in a very interesting way in the winter. They hibernate underneath the water. They nestle themselves under six to eighteen inches of thick mud. Bog turtles that are under two or three years of age don't hibernate in the mud.
